Update: White dresses are IN!
Tips to give you a smooth senior session
I'm asked nearly every session, "what do I wear", "what do I bring", and "where should we go?" Hopefully, I can guide you in the right direction with these tips I've compiled over the years to give you a smooth and stress free portrait experience.
- Wear something that you feel confident in. When you feel good, it shines through in your photos.
- Wear clothes that represent you and your personality. Have a favorite band? Pair their t-shirt with a cool jacket.
- Choose colors that suit you. By selecting complimentary colors, you'll be sure to look your best. Also, keep in mind what your surroundings could look like. Snow on the ground? Go with a color other than white. In the green, green woods or field? Maybe look at reds rather than green clothing.
- Have an outfit you've been dying to wear? Bring it! Something fashion-forward, funky or fun can add interest to your album.
- Accessorize!!!! Jewelry, hats, cute shoes, belts, scarves, flowy cardigans, sunglasses....if you love it, bring it!
- Play with textures and patterns. Denim, lace and leather can all add depth and texture to any photo.
- Show school spirit. Jerseys and school props are always fun to add in.
- Shoes. This one is often overlooked by both guys and gals. Wear clean shoes! Bring extra shoes! You never know where we might end up and a great pair of shoes could make or break the photo.
- Props. I love when my seniors bring props. Instruments, signs, books, umbrellas, glitter, smoke bombs (I can help with this one), cars, bikes, pets.....the list is endless! Just warn me in advance if it's something large or alive as it could require a change in location or special permit. But, if its been in your thoughts, just bring it! You'll regret it later, trust me.
- Makeup. If you're doing your own makeup, just remember, the camera and any flashes used will wash out your face. Go a little heavier than you do in normal everyday wear. Consider a slightly darker lip shade and plenty of mascara and be sure your foundation matches your skin tone.
- Consider a professional stylist. Sometimes having to do your own hair and makeup, maybe even your nails, on the day of is just too stressful. You might consider booking a professional to do it for you instead. Who doesn't love a little pampering?! Also, check that your eyebrows are on point (guys, you too). Senior men, make sure you've had a fresh haircut and facial hair is well groomed.
- Nails. As a follow-up on #11, consider having your nails done. Chipped polish does show up in photos, especially if I have your hands near your face. Gentlemen, please make sure your nails are trimmed and clean.
- Bring 3-5 outfits. We probably won't get to them all, but having options for different locations is a great idea.
- Try on outfit choices beforehand. At least a week before your day, try on the outfits and accessories you've chosen. Consider how you feel in them. Certain outfits make us feel certain ways. Do you feel bold, confident, cool, pretty or handsome? Great! Keep those! Not feelin' it? Ditch it and chose something else.
- Extras. My sessions are always outside. That being said, you should probably consider bringing bug spray, sun block, water bottles, oil blot sheets and possibly some music.
- Get Involved! I absolutely love when my seniors have a hand in the decision making. Together we can come up with awesome location ideas or styled shoots. Woods, fields, flowers, streams, barns, cityscapes...it can impact your clothing and prop choices as well as drive and set-up times. Just talk to me!
- Choose your photographer wisely. We're all different! Different editing styles, different preferred locations, shooting styles, posing vs. candid.... it's all unique to the photographer. Chose someone you feel comfortable talking to and whose style you love. These photos are going to be around forever after all.
- Lastly, DON'T SWEAT IT! These sessions are meant to be a fun and exciting way to express who you are as an individual. Don't stress over the details, it'll all work out. Get a good night's sleep and just let the day flow. We're going to have a blast!
